WH3081 Weather Station Review - WH3080, WS3081 Solar Wireless Professional

The WH3080 series was released in late 2010, and at the time of release, was the top of the range weather station made by Fine Offset.

Models & Differences from previous models

Similar to the WH1080 and 1090, the kit contains a base station receiver (console) and a suite of outdoor sensors. However the main differences are the console layout and the addition of light sensors and solar power.

The WH3080 is mainly sold throughout Europe. It includes a RCC (Radio Controlled Clock) in the outdoor transmitter, which takes advantage of the DCF77 time signal. The outdoor transmitter sends the received time to the console, negating the need to manually set the clock.

The WH3081 is sold in other regions, such as the Americas and Oceania. This model does not have RCC.

A very similar model, the WS3081, is also available.

In the box

WH3081 in packagingThe WH3081 comes in a large cardboard box, with an carton insert holding all the components. The following items are included:

Assembly of the weather station is required. Assembly instructions are provided in the user manual. Owners can mount everything on the supplied poles, although for best performance, each of the sensors can be separated and mounted in their respective optimal positions.

Each sensor comes with its own connecting cable. Many of the cables are ridiculously long, and the included cable zip ties are required to keep everything in a neat bundle if all the sensors are to be mounted close together on the supplied mounting poles.

Features

WH3081 backlightA deep green backlight comes on for 10 seconds whenever a button is pressed. Four LEDs illuminate the LCD, albeit unevenly. It is quite evident by the two bright spots on either side of the screen. The plastic light disperser seems rudimentary, as each dimple can be faintly seen behind the LCD panel.

Like its older cousins, the WH3081 can be connected to a PC (running Windows) to display and log weather data. The official bundled software is Easy Weather - it is clunky and not user friendly. A third party weather station application such as Cumulus can be used instead.

Base Station (Console)

WH3081 Console LCD segmentsUnlike older models, WH308x console is free standing, although the base can be removed for wall hanging if desired. The non-touch screen display is also a departure from its predecessor, which had a hard-to-read (and often unreliable) touch screen interface. The layout is much cleaner, and packs more detail into the display area.

An unlabelled button sits in the centre of a row of control buttons. This blank button is electrically unconnected, and serves no purpose. The contact membrane is present, which can become a handy spare should one of the others fail.

The console is powered by 3 x AA cells. The user manual and promotional literature states the batteries in the console should last at least 12 months. When plugged into a computer, it will take its power from the Universal Serial Bus. It can also be powered soley by USB (without batteries), although this is not recommended because it will lose all settings and memories if USB power is lost. Battery life should become more or less equal to their shelf life if the unit is constantly powered by USB.

The console has a volatile circular memory that can store 4096 entries. The period of time that can be  logged depends on the interval. 30 minutes is the default, and equates to just over 12 weeks. The interval can be changed using the Easy Weather software. As long as battery and/or USB power is maintained, the memory will maintain its data. Therefore, to prevent loss of saved data and settings, the USB cable should be plugged in before the batteries are replaced.

When plugged into a computer running Easy Weather (or Cumulus), weather conditions can be displayed and logged on the computer in real time - at least for indoor temperature - but is limited to the 48-second transmission interval for outdoor data.

Operation & Outdoor Sensors

As with its predecessors, the outdoor Thermo/Hygro transmitter sends a packet of data to the base station every 48 seconds. This transmission contains data from the outdoor sensors, which are: temperature, humidity, wind speed, direction and rain. The transmission is on 433.9 Mhz.

The new 'solar pod', which sits above the radiation shield, is connected to the 'Rain' input of the thermo-hygro unit. The centre two pins on the RJ12 connection remain assigned to the rain sensor, whilst the outer four pins carry power and light data. The connection from the rain sensor is subsequently connected to a pass-through 'Rain' socket on the bottom of the solar pod. In essense, it is a daisy chain arrangement. It retains backwards compatibility with rain gauges used with older weather stations.

As the standard temp/humidity/wind/rain transmission protocol probably doesn't allow additional information to be added, the solar pod initiates separate transmissions for the light and UV data. These occur every 60 seconds, and makes use of the transmitter in the Thermo-Hygro unit.

The outdoor sensor suite has remained fairly constant over the past few years. The parts are molded from UV resistant ABS plastic. One needs to be careful when handling the anenometer as the cups can easily break off if roughly handled.

Problems

One of the major (and well known) issues with the earlier releases of the WH3080 stations is the problematic Lux/UV solar sensor module (pod). In the UK, it is known to crash and then excessively drain the batteries. In other places (such as Australia), the solar pod is known to crash under high light and/or UV conditions. Some have speculated the microcontroller suffers from numerical overload when the unit is exposed to extreme UV or very bright sunlight.

Successor

The WH3080 has been superseded by the HP1000 weather station.

Any Idea on how to calibrate the wind speed on the 3081

Peter, Tue, 08 Jan 2013 10:28 pm: Reply
Had mine running at 1000m in SE Australia for 12 months now. The solar sensor died within the first day. One of the wind cups broke (possibly hail). The PC software is barely up to scratch - a shame the company has not supported the product with a software release/upgrade to get rid of some of the obvious problems.

Aside from these issues, the unit has survived very rugged conditions.

Bought the WS3081 for Christmas but the alarms keep going off every few minutes. Pressing the menu button several times to get to the setting made no difference - the alarm on/off button doesn't work. We removed the batteries because it was driving us nuts. The company we bought it from on line (New Aim P/L) apologised and offered us $30 towards the cost of repair but it's only been in use since Christmas Day. Not impressed.

Froggy, Sun, 10 Feb 2013 06:29 pm: Reply
Use the menu button to scroll through the 15 or so settings, and when you get to one that has an alarm setting after you press "enter" press the alarm on/off button to cancel that alarm and so on for the next one.

I bought a WS3081 in 2012 and right from the start had problems, I check all leads and plugs and eventually got everything going, albeit for a few months. The UV/Lux sensor and the solar power charger are faulty, I have to put new charged batteries in every 3-4 months, if I do a reset on the solar module the UV/Lux shows on the display for a short while then disappears. I reported the fault to the Australian company I bought it from but was offered $20 to fix it myself, which I refused, this company says the WS3081 only has a 90 day warranty. I have just sent an email to FOSHK outlining the problem with the hope they may send me a new solar charger/UV/Lux sensor unit, so far no reply. Everything else performs well and I will be happy with the unit if they replace the faulty part.

Hi, Just bought one off Ebay from a&s powersellers and comes with a 12 months warranty. Had an oregon station prier to this, solar colecters brake down after a while.

No reply from FOSHK since my email on February 5 2013, very disappointed. How about it FOSHK send a disgruntled client a replacement solar panel/UV/Lux module?

Reading all the internet comments about this problem it is something you should address or at least make an effort and reply to a customer with a problem.

Still no reply from Fine Offset Electronics at at March 10, 2013, very bad customer service for a known fault in the WS/WH3081. I have asked them to send me a replacement solar panel/UV/Lux module but they won't even give me the courtesy of a reply to my email or these posts - not good!!!!

Lee, Tue, 12 Mar 2013 10:45 pm: Reply
Yeah my solar/UV/lux module died as well.. covered the sensor with tape.. took out the batteries and reset everything.. it seems to be working again. albeit at an incorrect reading.

I finally got a reply from Fine Offset Electronics, they told me that there were faulty Solar power/UV/Lux modules and that they had supplied their distributors with replacements as it would have been too costly to post them out themselves. I have sent an email to ozplaza.living (ebayer) aka New Aim P/L in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia from whom I purchased the faulty unit asking them to supply me with a replacement module. I also asked FOSHK how much it would cost for them to post me the module if I can't get one from their distributor, the reply was US$50 which is very pricey, I have received other items from Hong Kong for much less postage. I am waiting to see what the distributor says.

James - had the same problem with the anemometer - found there was some obstruction in the bearing which intermittently jammed the rotor. Have fixed it by removing the rotor (a push fit on the bearing) and spraying some WD40 into the bearing - has been working OK for the last month.

Jonas, sorry But I didnt see your request till today: sales@foshk.com the other email on their website doesnt work.

I had given up on my WS3081's problems with Solar Power/UV/Lux until I saw an ad in Ebay from a Queensland, Australia supplier selling just what I wanted, he promptly replied to my email and said they are the latest model, I have ordered one along with the new model PH 1000 weather station (which I think is still FOSHK?)
Disappointed with FOSHK's lack of customer service, I will report back how the new module goes and how the PH 1000 goes (it is on Ebay Australia)

Neil Campbell, Thu, 23 May 2013 02:50 pm: Reply
I installed the 2013 module for the UV/Solar/Lux and my WS3081 sprung back into action, charging the rechargeable batteries and giving UV and Lux readings again, worth the $30+

I also purchased the PH1000 which is a great unit, connects to wifi and transmits weather results to www.wunderground.com so I can view my weather station over the internet from anywhere. The rooftop unit is bigger and more compact than the WS3081, more weatherproof. I am hoping it will continue to perform but so far I am very happy with it. There were a few minor problems with programming but with a bit of help from oz-weather on Ebay I had it up and running in no time.
Hans, Wed, 19 Jun 2013 11:01 am:
Where can I get the 2013 module for the UV/Solar/Lux? I have tried searching ebay but find nothing.
Terry, Thu, 29 Aug 2013 04:16 pm:
For Hans, just type WH3081 in the Ebay search box and you should get the result. The seller is weather-center (American spelling) and the store is OZ Weather Center. As of today, panels are $37.50 with $8 postage.

I have been using my WH3080 since mid March. Everything went well for period, but now I keep getting messages from WeatherCat telling me that USB connection is lost. Tried 2 different receivers, 2 different cables, and different USB ports on my iMac.

Depending on its mood, may or may not connect, reboot or not. Any suggestions?

I'm having problems with the USB connections conking out every month or two requiring a full reset which is annoying because i have to set the time etc... Does anyone else have this problem? I also have stuck a piece of tape over the Solar sensor and it doesn't die anymore.. albeit the readings are significantly reduced, but at least I can get a graph that is representative of the light that day.
For the price, the unit is pretty good I guess. had it for 6 months now and it uploads my data to wunderground.com

Not sure if this is of any use, but I have heard that this unit has some RJ-12 or RJ-45 connectors in the outside units that are not terminated correctly, it appears that they need re-crimping, hope this helps

I have a WH-3081 and in set up when I try to save I get a message "Please enter a number" I must be missing something, but what the only place I can see that is missing something is at the bottom under pressure. Relative has a figure but absolute does not and is greyed out. Has anyone else had this problem? Also I purchased this unit from Ce-Technologies in Sydney. I had a problem and had to send it back under warranty. I had all sorts of problems with this guy it took nearly 5 months and a lot of emails and ;phone calls to get my property back. Will never purchase from him again.
Phil, Thu, 19 Dec 2013 02:27 am:
Hi Bob. Did u get the figures sorted?

Are you aware of the Cumulus software?

http://sandaysoft.com/forum/index.php
Anonymous, Fri, 27 Dec 2013 10:13 am:
It happens when the pressure sensor has failed. EasyWeather reads the absolute pressure form the station. If the station is faulty, there is no absolute pressure, and because EasyWeather is as poorly designed as it is, will complain that the pressure is missing and prompt you to enter it (even though it is a readonly field!).

Take it back to your seller and get an replacement or refund.
Nick Poulos, Wed, 28 Jan 2015 07:36 am:
I purchased and put into operation the Nevada station wh-3080-solar, on December 2th 2014, using the application EasyWeatherPlus version 1.0. Few days later I installed the newest version 2.0.

After two weeks, while running version 2, the following events happened simultaneously:
- the absolute pressure sensor stopped responding
- the application refuses to download history data from the connected device

All other instruments & sensors work well!

Both versions of the application (EasyWeatherPlus) seems to be poorly designed (for example “complain that the pressure is missing and prompts to enter a value, in a read-only field!” - as “Anonymous” described earlier).
Now I use Cumulus, an application of superior quality!

I think that an utility or a special program, can reset or fix the failed pressure sensor.
So, has anyone seen such a program?

The temp/RH sensor has been faultless since installation, only had two battery changes since 2010.

Purchased WS-3081 about 2 months ago. It regularly fails to give outside temps, win and rain readout. Forcing a handshake by holding the down arrow on console for 4 secs sometimes recovers for a while. Some nights I get no readings at all, but sometimes it happens during the day. The light and UV reading usually works most of the time. The ebayer I bought it from had it sent from NewAim. Have contacted N/A for warranty, but they say contact seller for refund. Seller agreed to refund, but didn't. They seem to have disappeared. Stuck with a useless piece of junk.

Have the WH-3081 running in Northern Territory (Australia) and it gets totally destroyed due to UV Index upto 16 with 36-40c temps daily. Using Cumulus whitch is reading unbelievable stats, I may have to experiment with relocating some of the components. it's not designed for Australian Heat (:

There were two USB issues: 1) RF/EMI interference, 2) hangs of WeatherSmart sw on pc. Two parts to resolution: a) use a cable w/ ballast/choke (such as come with digital cameras), b) keep the USB cable away from the bottom of the base stn.

There are. Absolute PITA :) Would not recommend this station to anyone who doesn't mind learning an approximately weekly (on average) reset schedule involving restarting services, power cycling and resetting date and time on the unit... and occasionally having to go and delete spurious data in weewx and weatherunderground :)

I had a similar issue and when I removed the cover of the rain gauge I found a small family of spiders had moved it and managed to stop the self draining mechanism from working.

Ubeaut, Thu, 12 Mar 2015 04:13 pm:
Just pick the option that says fine offset and if it has a UV on your weather station then pick fineoffset with UV.

I have had my 3081 running for 3 years but have had to replace the temperature sensors twice as it get to a minimum temp and won't go any lower.

Sometimes it locks up but I have a script that checks if it has locked up by seeing if the ftp files are older than 15 minutes and then I reboot the host and I have hooked the usb to a normaly close switch and I don't have batteries in the console so I drop power on the USB cable and it reboots the console as well.

I use X10 modules for that. I run cumulus on windows 7 on virtualbox on a linux server (Ubuntu)

I have Mine working since July 2012 until today.

Indeed, sometimes for no apparent reason, I need to RESET the base station. (remove bateries)
It will then catch again the station on the ROOF.

Also other problem I have was the wind speed anemometer.
Bought a second one that also lasted a little more than year, and now, just decided to buy small radial ball bearings ([MR104 ZZ 4 X 10 X 4MM]) it is to just to fix this instead of buying the third anemometer.

As up of recently, the batteries on the station (alkaline rechargeable) I find this very good. Those bateries lasted 3,5 years.

My base station stopped working at all via USB; I suspect the flash(?) memory is corrupted. Attempting to clear the memory via wee_device was unsuccessful.

Replacing the base station functionality with a USB DVB-T dongle (weewx-sdr) and a BMP180 (for inside temperature and air pressure - but not inside humidity) on the Raspberry Pi works a treat. No lockups, no data glitches etc.

The base station is still running standalone, but was started losing connectivity with the sensors - possibly due to high outdoor temperatures. (No issues via the USB dongle.)

The base station stopped working completely; I'll have a go at fixing it, but adding a display to the Pi is probably easier and more reliable.

False alarm - the batteries were flat. (The memory is still corrupt.)

If you find that you can't disable the rain rate alarm, check it for each of the time ranges.

Hey. Soon your hosting account and your domain fineoffset.com will be blocked forever, and you will receive tens of thousands of negative feedback from angry people.

Pay me 0.5 BTC until June 1, 2019.
Otherwise, you will get the reputation of a malicious spammer, your site fineoffset.com will be blocked for life and you will be sued for insulting believers. I guarantee this to you.

My bitcoin wallet: 19ckouUP2E22aJR5BPFdf7jP2oNXR3bezL

Here is a list of what you get if you don’t follow my requirements:
+ abuse spamhouse for aggressive web spam
+ tens of thousands of negative reviews about you and your website from angry people for aggressive web and email spam
+ lifetime blocking of your hosting account for aggressive web and email spam
+ lifetime blocking of your domain for aggressive web and email spam
+ Thousands of angry complaints from angry people will come to your mail and messengers for sending you a lot of spam
+ complete destruction of your reputation and loss of clients forever
+ for a full recovery from the damage you need tens of thousands of dollars

All of the above will result in blocking your domain and hosting account for life. The price of your peace of mind is 0.5 BTC.

Do you want this?

If you do not want the above problems, then before June 1, 2019, you need to send me 0.5 BTC to my Bitcoin wallet: 19ckouUP2E22aJR5BPFdf7jP2oNXR3bezL

How do I do all this to get this result:
1. I will send messages to 33 000 000 sites with contact forms with offensive messages with the address of your site, that is, in this situation, you and the spammer and insult people.
And everyone will not care that it is not you.
2. I’ll send messages to 19,000,000 email addresses and very intrusive advertisements for making money and offer a free iPhone with your website address fineoffset.com and your contact details.
And then send out abusive messages with the address of your site.
3. I will do aggressive spam on blogs, forums and other sites (in my database there are 35 978 370 sites and 315 900 sites from which you will definitely get a huge amount of abuse) of your site fineoffset.com.
After such spam, the spamhouse will turn its attention on you and after several abuses your host will be forced to block your account for life.
Your domain registrar will also block your domain permanently.

All of the above will result in blocking your domain and hosting account for life.
If you do not want to receive thousands of complaints from users and your hosting provider, then pay before June 1, 2019.
The price of your peace of mind is 0.5 BTC.
Otherwise, I will send your site through tens of millions of sites that will lead to the blocking of your site for life and you will lose everything and your reputation as well.
But get a reputation as a malicious spammer.
